Accessible, Sustainable & Beautiful Mass Timber Residence Hall
In honor of Alma Clark, the first Black student to attend Western, Alma Clark Glass Hall provides Black Affinity Housing as well as other themed living groups that are represented in this 400-bed residence hall.

An existing housing structure was torn down and this progressive structure was erected in its place. This 400-bed, 117,340 SF residential hall provides an accessible pathway, dubbed the 'Shared Journey,' down an 80-foot hillside. The central section provided the greatest challenge because the first floor amenity spaces have different structural support and MEP system needs than residential uses above. Amenities on every floor include dedicated study rooms and lounges with communal kitchens. The third, main level boasts a larger more commercial feel kitchen, café, and bar seating, multiple private meeting/study rooms, media room, and outdoor gathering area with feature gas fire pit. Each section of this three-building complex features a different framing system with a variety of mass timber applications to respond to differing uses in each. Our foreman coordinated with the design team to design a false floor above the CLT allowing all rough in to be hidden for the CLT ceilings on main floor common space. As a college campus with many levels of security, the access control system was one of the most intensive and complex installations our company has installed and coordinated. This fully modeled Design-Build project achieved LEED gold certification.
