Bringing New Life to Former Brutalist Resident Hall
Demolition and replacement of the 1963 concrete structure is making way for newly reimagined student housing.

When complete, the nine-story, 230,000 SF hall will house 800 students, primarily those in their first or second years on campus. Built amidst UW's active campus and with a challenging 45-foot grade change to navigate, the design will feature walkable loops, a forested central courtyard, and a signature staircase. Sustainability is a key focus on this project, which is targeting LEED Gold, and it will achieve high standards in energy consumption and carbon reduction. The new building will employ a combination of steel and wood construction methods and is anticipated to open for the Fall 2027 quarter.

VECA helped reduce costs by maximizing electrical construction efficiency in the wood-frame structure so those savings could be reallocated to front-of-house and amenity areas, where a higher level of design finish was desired. Close collaboration during early design stages with Dark Light Design and Pacific Lighting Source resulted in budget-conscious lighting solutions while preserving the design intent. VECA also partnered with the mechanical team to reduce costs in the building’s electrical distribution system by eliminating unnecessary equipment.
