Western Washington University - Interdisciplinary Science Building
Constructed on a tight site in the heart of WWU's active campus, this four-story structure is envisioned to showcase a next generation STEM building. Science and learning are on full display, inspiring interactivity, collaboration, and connectivity. Sustainable construction was a focus point, and was achieved at every possible impact point—from re-using displaced trees to implementing sunshades and rainwater management featuring a natively planted bioswale. Electrical innovations include use of all LED lighting fixtures, establishing LEED standards for operation and maintenance, and procurement of low carbon construction materials.VECA's scope entailed installing medium voltage feeders from across campus through the tunnel system to an intricately designed electrical room feeding double-ended switchgear for power redundancy. Additionally, each classroom and lab had a high density of power, data, and AV to promote collaboration and active learning. With many exposed post tension concrete deck ceilings throughout the project, a great deal of care was taken to coordinate pathways in the concrete.
